Laser vaginal rejuvenation is fast becoming a popular lifestyle aesthetic procedure requested by women who are more educated and aware of their sexual needs. It used to be that vaginal operations were confined to women who has pathological conditions such as prolapsed uterus or stress incontinence as a result of vaginal laxity due to childbirth. We now hear more of various aesthetic procedures requested by women such as hymenoplasty (restoration of hymen) and labiaplasty (correction of the vaginal labial to a more aesthetic
look) in addition to the traditional posterior and anterior repair for vaginal laxity. The change in attitude towards sex among women and the desire to maintain a healthy sexual relationship coupled with the awareness through the internet of the variation in appearance of the female genitalia has led to an increase demand for such procedures.
The term laser vaginal rejuvenation was first made popular by Dr David Matlock who is a board certified gynecologist in Los Angeles in the 1990’s. Dr Matlock’s procedure mainly involved use of a laser to carry out the various traditional operations to tighten the vaginal instead of using the scalpel for the operations. In general the advantage of using the laser over the scalpel for such operations is minimal. However, we must credit him for popularizing the term and trend in vaginal rejuvenation in USA.
Vaginal rejuvenation basically means carrying out procedures to try to restore the appearance and function of the vaginal to the younger state which is basically tighter, stronger tone, more sensation for the couple, more secretions and rejuvenated sexual satisfaction. Childbirth in addition to aging is the most important contribution to the change in the appearance and function of the vagina. Even if there is no vaginal delivery which stretches the vaginal muscle, the hormonal changes due to pregnancy will result in some significant changes. Menopause will result in vaginal dryness. Hormonal replacement therapy may help. Laser vaginal rejuvenation can also be used for postmenopausal women.
Since the term laser vaginal rejuvenation was first popularised by Dr Matlock in the1990’s, various nonsurgical lasers has been introduced for vaginal rejuvenation of the vaginal mucosal and toning of the vaginal muscles. The two types of lasers used are Erbium-yag lasers and the fractional CO2 lasers. The procedure is a nonsurgical 20 min painless treatment which involves putting a small vaginal laser probe to rejuvenate the vaginal mucosal. There is no cutting involved and no need to take time off from work. It is most useful for women with mild to moderate laxity who do not wish to go for surgery. It will help to rejuvenate the tone of vaginal muscle, increase vaginal secretion and sensation during sexual intercourse. In addition, many of the women reported better bladder control resulting in less time waking up at night to pass urine.
While the procedure can be carried out by any doctor, it will be ideal if a gynaecologist is involved. A gynaecologist will be able to assess the vaginal condition thoroughly and should additional gynaecological procedures are needed he would be able to advise the patient accordingly.
In addition to the laser vaginal rejuvenation for the vaginal lining, some patients will request for laser whitening of the external genitalia, laser rejuvenation of the external appearance and even laser hair removal. In my opinion, this is not as important as the internal laser vaginal rejuvenation. Finally, it is very important to emphasize to the public that while laser vaginal rejuvenation can do wonders to the sexual relationship of a couple, it cannot be expected to repair a damaged relationship. I have seen women who have requested for the procedure because of problems in their relationship with their husband. I have counselled them and have actually asked them to reconsider doing the laser vaginal rejuvenation.
In conclusion, the laser vaginal rejuvenation is a simple non-surgical painless procedure to rejuvenate the vaginal lining resulting in better tone, sensation, secretion and sexual satisfaction.
