Most women in their lives experience decreased libido or a “low sex drive” at some point. A low sex drive can be caused by several reasons – varying from temporary lifestyle factors to a persistent medical condition. Unfortunately, many women with sexual problems such as a low sex drive never seek medical attention or help due to the sensitive and personal nature of the subject and suffer in silence.
Dr. Terence Teoh is a Life Member of the Society of Anti-Aging, Aesthetic and Regenerative Medicine Malaysia (SAAARM). In this article certified gynecologist and women’s health expert, Dr. Terence Teoh discusses some of the most common causes of low sex drive. He explains some innovative and effective treatments available to treat this problem.
What Causes Low Sex Drive in Women?
1. Lifestyle Causes of Low Sex Drive
A stressful lifestyle correlates to a dip in one’s sex drive. For example, being a parent and having young children around at all times can deprive you of time for (and less interest in) sex. Similarly having a high-stress job can also leave you feeling you are “not in the mood” often. These are very typical, temporary, and normal reasons for lower libido. To alleviate stress, as well as help you achieve a better life balance women can try using stress management techniques, managing time more efficiently, and talking to a therapist. Which can mean more time, and energy, and can help restore interest in a healthy sex drive!
2. Depression and Low Sex Drive
Depression can affect every aspect of a person’s life – physically and mentally – and can negatively impact sex drive as well. Women are 3 times more likely to struggle with depression than men. Depression among women can be devastating – but fortunately, it is treatable. Please seek consultation from a mental health care professional if depression is diminishing your sex drive or any other aspect of your life. If you live in Johor Bahru, Dr. Terence would be happy to refer you to a reputed and trustworthy psychiatrist or therapist.
3. Medication Causes of Low Sex Drive
Ironically, the SSRI medications prescribed to treat depression – including Lexapro, Zoloft, and Prozac – can also further decrease libido. If antidepressants are affecting your sex drive, you can discuss it with your doctor and look into a good alternative non-SSRI antidepressants – such as Wellbutrin – that do not decrease libido as a side effect.
Birth control pills that contain estrogen and progestin can also decrease libido, too. If you suspect that your birth control is negatively affecting your sex drive, schedule an appointment with the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, UK-certified gynecologist Dr. Terence Teoh to discuss alternative contraception options such as low-hormone birth control pills or an IUD. These options may be better for you as they are less likely to interfere with your sex drive.
4. Vaginal Conditions Causing Low Sex Drive
Childbirth, aging, and the hormonal changes of menopause can take a toll on vaginal health that can also contribute to a decrease in a woman’s sex drive. All of these factors can result in vaginal dryness, loss of laxness, and decreased sensitivity. This can make penetration painful and sex that is painful or doesn’t feel good. If you feel pain instead of pleasure during sex, it will most certainly lower your libido!
