Insights from Dr. Terence Teoh, Terence Teoh Women Specialist Clinic
Pregnancy complications such as missed abortion and incomplete abortion can be emotionally and physically challenging for women. In such cases, a procedure known as Dilatation and Curettage (D&C) is often recommended. Dr. Terence Teoh, a senior gynecologist based in Johor Bahru and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore, sheds light on these conditions and the role of D&C in treatment.
Understanding Missed and Incomplete Abortion
According to Dr. Teoh, a missed abortion occurs when a fetus has stopped developing, but the body does not expel the pregnancy tissue. “Women may not experience immediate symptoms, which is why regular prenatal check-ups are crucial,” he explained. On the other hand, an incomplete abortion happens when some pregnancy tissue is expelled, but remnants remain in the uterus, potentially leading to infection or heavy bleeding.
The Role of D&C
D&C, a common gynecological procedure, involves dilating the cervix and gently removing tissue from the uterus. Dr. Teoh emphasized that D&C is often necessary to prevent complications such as infection, prolonged bleeding, or emotional distress. “The procedure is safe and typically performed under anesthesia, ensuring minimal discomfort for the patient,” he added.
A Compassionate Approach
Dr. Teoh highlighted the importance of emotional support for women undergoing such procedures. “It’s not just about the physical aspect; we must address the psychological impact as well. Counseling and follow-up care are integral to the healing process.”
For women in Johor Bahru facing these challenges, Dr. Teoh assures that advanced medical care and compassionate support are readily available. “Early diagnosis and timely intervention can make a significant difference,” he concluded.
